The
stories had been out there for at least a year about DC Group Editor Eddie
Berganza and his behavior towards women. Liz Gehrlein Marsham reported to DC
higher ups that he cornered her, stuck his tongue in her mouth, and attempted to
grope her. She left DC six years after the encounter. Former DC editor Janelle
Asselin and three other women complained to the Human Resources department in
2010. Their complaint went nowhere so she and the other women left the company.
Berganza remained and oversaw the publication of Superman, Supergirl, Wonder
Woman and the current Dark Knights: Metal. And over the years instead of doing
anything about his behavior since his books were selling any female who started
working for DC was warned to avoid him at all costs. After the 2010 complaint he
was supposedly disciplined about his behavior but in 2012 he forced a kiss on a
woman at a hotel after a convention. He was demoted but as time passed he was
overseeing a major amount of DC titles. And things were fine until the Harvey
Weinstein story broke and Berganza ended up on the cover of the New York Daily
News alongside Kevin Spacey and others accused of sexual harassment. Berganza
was immediately suspended and then fired from DC. According to Bleeding Cool’s
Rich Johnston the mood around DC is chaotic. One of the main reasons Berganza
lasted so long was his ability to keep the books getting out on time. Some still
supported him, some are glad he’s gone and some talent is now willing to work on
books he used to oversee. Time will tell what his exit means for a number of
titles in 2018. |
