Bellator
MMA hasn’t had a heavyweight champion for damn near a year and a half. So they
have announced an eight-man heavyweight tournament Grand Prix that will begin in
late-January and end in December 2018. The eight fighters are: Fedor Emelianenko,
Frank Mir, Roy Nelson, Matt Mitrione, light heavyweight champion Ryan Bader,
Rampage Jackson, King Mo and Chael Sonnen. But Sonnen isn’t a heavyweight and
Bader already has a title. And the tournament is filled with UFC rejects since
Mir, Nelson, Jackson and Mitrione were all released or left. Emelianenko is a
shadow of a shadow of himself so this tournament could be a snooze fest. The
schedule has Jackson face Sonnen on 1/20, with Emelianenko vs. Mir, Mitrione vs.
Nelson and Bader vs. Lawal. The winner of the Jackson vs. Sonnen fight will face
the winner of the Emelianenko vs. Mir fight. The winner of the Mitrione vs.
Nelson fight will face the winner of the Bader vs. Lawal fight. You will notice
there are no alternates named so if someone gets hurt then the entire Grand Prix
will be an epic fail. Bellator President Scott Coker did tell ESPN’s Brett
Okamoto the promotion is considering naming Shane Carwin, Cheick Kongo or Bobby
Lashley as those alternates. |
