Multiple Viewpoints on the End of the World

The new Image book Evolution from writers James Asmus, Joseph Keatinge, Christopher Sebela and Joshua Williamson with art from Joe Infurnari and Jordan Boyd explored a phenomenon that is driving human evolution. The story is told from the perspective of a scientist, a Catholic nun, and a young woman. The idea behind the series came as pitch for a writers’ room book about the end of the world. They all had to figure out just how the world would end and make it different from previous end of the world stories. Once they had that worked out then they had to decide how to write the book so a method was devised how many pages each writer needed and how the make each issue mesh into a coherent story. All agreed that the exact reason things were changing would be mysterious but all perspectives such as a supernatural reason, a scientific reason, a religious one or one in which monsters really exist would be explored. The monster angle uses the body horror genre seen in just about every David Cronenberg film. The science angle is told from the perspective of Dr. Abe Hurley, who may have a handle on what is going on but most believe he is a conspiracy nut. He sees what the other major characters Sister Hannah and Claire, who have figured out more than he has so far. Claire and her friend Rochelle become a part of the story when a customer of Claire’s parents comes around looking for some old scary movies her parents used to sell. One of those films suggests that Los Angeles may be the nexus point for the evolution. So as the series progresses the four of them will end up on the same path but on different roads.
