Eric
M Esquivel, the writer of the new DC/Vertigo comic Border Town, was identified
as an accused sexual abuser, which led to the other people working on the book
to depart. The accusations came in a blog post by toy designer Cynthia Naugle,
who told of her experience with a former co-worker at a Tucson, Arizona, comic
shop. She identified the person as "X," but the detailed account of abusive and
harassing behavior, including sexual assault, mentioned the person was working
on a current Vertigo series. People familiar with Esquivel's work history made
the connections quickly and identified him as the unnamed subject. Esquivel
immediately deleted most of his social media presence except his Twitter account
but it is locked from public view. Colorist Tamra Bonvillain announced that she
was leaving the title after the end of her contract, which was #5. Artist Ramon
Villalobos then walked away from the book and mentioned he has heard "vague
rumors" about Esquivel's behavior. DC has cancelled the book effective with #4,
#5 and #6 will not ship and the first three issues are now returnable. |
