Matt
Reeves’ Batman film is still just being called The Batman. The script is done
and Reeves says it isn’t an adaptation of Batman: Year One so we will not see
the Wayne family gunned down again. One thing that is for sure is Ben Affleck
will not return since the Batman in the film will be younger. So far there have
been rumors that Mad Men’s Jon Hamm is in the running (but he would be too old
even though he is willing), Game of Thrones’ Kit Harington (who would play the
role ala Adam West), Unbroken’s Jack O’Connell and just last week Lone Ranger’s
Armie Hammer was the person likely to wear the cowl. He was cast as Batman in
the cancelled George Miller’s Justice League Mortal project. But reliable
sources say that no casting talk has even happened yet and Hammer himself shot
down the report. What we do know is the film will be released in the summer of
2021. Reeves’ script came in at 160 pages and will be shrunk down before
production begins. Batman will either be a younger person in their 20s (Reeves
choice) or an older actor in their 30s (the studio’s choice). Reeves did tell
THR the film will deliver on an aspect of the character the live-action films
have shied away from – his skills as a detective: "It’s very much a point of
view-driven, noir Batman tale. It’s told very squarely on his shoulders, and I
hope it’s going to be a story that will be thrilling but also emotional. It’s
more Batman in his detective mode than we’ve seen in the films. The comics have
a history of that. He’s supposed to be the world’s greatest detective, and
that’s not necessarily been a part of what the movies have been. I’d love this
to be one where when we go on that journey of tracking down the criminals and
trying to solve a crime, it’s going to allow his character to have an arc so
that he can go through a transformation." Reeves confirmed that the film is
currently called The Batman, but that may not be the name of the film and said
the film will have multiple villains. In other Batman news reports of a Batman
Beyond film are false. And with shooting completed the Todd Phillips-directed
Joker with Joaquin Phoenix was re-written as the film was being made partially
because of the physical changes Phoenix did for the role which prevented
reshoots being done at a later date. The film came in on time, on budget and
without any major issues during the shoot. |
