The
Nevada State Athletic Commission has determined the future of UFC lightweight
champion Khabib Nurmagomedov and Conor McGregor. Both along with some of
Nurmagomedov's teammates were suspended by the NAC after the incident in the
Octagon after their UFC 229 contest. Nurmagomedov won by submission and
afterwards he started yelling at McGregor's corner men, jumped the cage, and
jumped into the middle of them which started a small riot that saw a member of
his team punch McGregor in the cage while he wasn't looking. Brian Sandoval, the
governor of Nevada was rushed out of the building due to what happened in the
cage. Nurmagomedov has been suspended for nine months and fined $500,000
retroactive to October 6th, the night of UFC 229. The suspension can be reduced
to six months if he participates in an anti-bullying PSA campaign. The six month
suspension would end in April while the nine month suspension end in July and
could allow him to fight during UFC’s annual event during International Fight
Week depending on the date. But as always there is a catch-there were one year
suspensions and matching $25,000 fines handed out to his teammates Abubakar
Nurmagomedov and Zubaira Tukhugov. ESPN's Ariel Helwani said he doesn't expect
Nurmagomedov to fight until those suspensions are up which would put the
lightweight title on ice for a year. Or Dana White will strip him of the title
since he has no interest in having the belt in limbo. White hade it clear on the
night of the fight that neither men would ever fight in UFC again anyway so
holding out for his teammates seems pointless. McGregor was suspended for six
months and was fined $50,000 and so he is eligible to return as early as April.
He wasn’t there but NAC officials were not happy with his pre-fight rhetoric
against Nurmagomedov and his family. They suggested that fighters would be fined
in the future for what they say and not just what they do. Nurmagomedov
responded to the suspensions of him and his teammates on Twitter with:
“'Politics forever”. |
