FX
ordered a pilot and picked up the pilot for Y, a TV series adaptation of Brian
K. Vaughan/Pia Guerra 60-issue Vertigo comic Y: The Last Man. There have been
multiple attempts to adapt the property and none went past the development
stage. But things for a while went right for a change. In the comic we followed
young amateur escape artist Yorick Brown and his pet monkey Ampersand, the last
two men on Earth. Something killed every mammal on Earth possessing a Y
chromosome which included including embryos, fertilized eggs, and even sperm.
Society collapsed and the surviving woman had to deal with the situation. We
followed Yorick on a mission to find his girlfriend Beth, who was on vacation in
Australia. The planned series was to star Barry Keoghan, Diane Lane, Amber
Tamblyn, Imogen Poots and Timothy Hutton as the President of the United States.
Everything was a go until at the last minute FX decided not to move forward with
the series adaptation in “its current form”. Producers Aida Mashaka Croal and
Michael Green went on Twitter to make the announcement about their exit over
creative differences. In a joint statement, the pair said: “We hoped to reward
their talent and their trust not just with success, but with a show that had
something to say, in a time when things must be said. As Y fans ourselves, we
hope the future allows just that.” FX is looking for a new creative team.
