Tony
Isabella, the original co-creator of Black Lightning, has criticized DC over
what he sees as the character's supporting role in Batman and the Outsiders. The
day the first issue came out he went on Twitter and posted: "Don't try to put a
silver lining on DC reducing Black Lightning to Batman's support negro. It's
insulting to the character, his fans and the creator with whom he wouldn't
exist. For authentic Black Lightning, read Black Lightning: Cold Dead Hands and
watch the brilliant TV show." He later posted: "If you don't already understand
why DC Comics reducing Black Lightning to Batman's support negro is
insulting...if you give me the lame 'that's the marketplace; response...you're
never going to get it. We don't have anything to talk about." The reaction to
the series from Isabella didn’t go over well with series writer Bryan Hill who
responded with: "I care about Black Lightning very much. I also care about
Katana, Cassandra Cain and Duke Thomas. These characters have passionate fans
that deserve thoughtful stories. My hope is that Batman and the Outsides prove
that for everyone.” He went on to say that fans shouldn’t attack any creator for
their opinion of him or his work.
