NETFLIX HAS A BIG CHECKBOOK Posted: 072119
Salaries may have gone down for most of Hollywood’s stars but not at Netflix. For example Tom Cruise will make around $12-14 million for Top Gun: Maverick but during the 90’s he was making over $20 million. But a new article in Variety shows that stars can make a lot of money for streaming services, Netflix in particular. Ryan Reynolds is being paid $27 million to star in the Michael Bay-directed Six Underground which deals with a billionaire-financed vigilante squad. Will Smith will get $35 million for returning for the Bright sequel but he’s only getting $17 million to do Bad Boys for Life. Denzel Washington was offered $30 million to star in a Netflix action film but passed. Compare that to the $20 million that Dwayne Johnson is getting for Hobbs & Shaw, which is what Robert Downey Jr. is getting for The Voyage of Dr. Dolittle. Emily Blunt is getting $12 for A Quiet Place 2 and Gal Gadot is getting $10 million for Wonder Woman 1984. One major difference is that the Netflix deals are all upfront so the talent gets no residuals or money from what the film profits. Lupita Nyong’o did Us for little more than scale but once the film is released on home video she will make a lot more; Smith will make extra money after Bad Boys for Life makes its money on video.
