Sony Pictures and Walt Disney Studios have officially made a
deal to keep Spider-Man in the MCU. Jon Watts is now in negotiations to return
for the third film. Variety suggests that there may be a ‘shared detailed
universe’ which connects the MCU films with Sony’s Spider-Man films like Venom 2
and Morbius. The new deal has Disney/Marvel putting up 25% of the budget and
keeping 25% of the profits, which was the same deal Disney had offered in the
first place. Disney will keep all the merchandising money. The new Spider-Man
film will open on July 16th 2021 (the script was already being worked on so now
production delays). And the person who saved the deal was Tom Holland. Heat
Vision reported that by mid-late August any chance of a partnership between the
two studios for the project was “100% dead,” but after D23 was over Holland
spent the next few weeks making multiple appeals to both Disney CEO Bob Iger and
Sony film chairman Tom Rothman to reach a resolution, using the negative
reaction of fans as leverage. So we get Spider-Man 3 and at least one additional
Disney-Marvel film, all overseen by Marvel Studios Kevin Feige. Disney CEO Bob
Iger confirmed that Holland got his direct number and called him to push for a
deal and then once Iger talked to people within Disney Studios and then called
Rothman to get the deal done.
