Catching Up With Snyder and Soule's Undiscovered
Country |
Scott
Snyder and Charles Soule Image comic Undiscovered Country has been a hit since
the first issue shipped. The Giuseppe Camuncoli drawn series takes place in a
world where the United States has sealed itself off from the outside world for
quite some time. But when a global epidemic threatens to kill millions a team of
specialists will have to enter the US where they find that everything has
changed and the US is filled with strange creatures and roving bands of
marauders ruling the country. Snyder says the series came to be when he noticed
a trend in the country to become isolationist so he started to do research and
he and Soule ended up learning about such things like the strange fish we see
after they both took a visit to DARPA (the huge think tank). So what they came
up with was an off the chain version of Star Wars with weird creatures and
rolling cities. Every city that we see in the series will be what could happen
in certain regions of the country if America went in a certain direction. And
each city is different by design. The main character of the book is Sam Elgin,
who at the start of the series declared himself as the un-silent majority. He is
the one who sent the message for the specialists to enter the US but there is
something going on with him that we haven’t learned yet. Both feel that the
relationship between Daniel and Charlotte is the emotional core of the series
but as things progress we will learn why each member of the team was chosen
along with their back stories. And just because the two are in a relationship at
the beginning of he series doesn’t mean that it will last past the first arc.
The comic was optioned to become a film even before the first issue shipped.
