This
installment of Global Frequency takes place in Berlin where a
terrorist wants to deliver his message by destroying a major
portion of Germany. Because this tale will be a bloody one
Warren Ellis enlisted the aid of a man who can show us carnage
with the best of them, Simon Bisley.
The operatives used in this issue are the hyper stylish Miranda
Zero, the chatty Ms. Lau and the man you never want to meet, Mr.
Grushko. After sending vehicles into a kill zone as bait Lau and
Grushko try to find the leader of the terrorist cell in their
own special ways. Lau's method gives us the first horribly
bloody sight we see in the issue but since the Russian uses an
ax we see that more gore is coming along shortly.
Ellis is pretty good at violence filled conversations about
ideology so he has Lau discuss the facts of life with the leader
as the rest search for him. As we listen to them the danger
level is slipped in with a single panel of a plane carrying
weapons of mass destruction just like a movie. Also somewhat
cinematically we get various perspectives of the two during the
talk that shows us that both are losing blood rapidly.
We know that the Frequency will succeed in their mission but the
tension level remains high all the way to the end. Ellis also
masks the location of Grushko until the last page and even then
we don't see him until he does what he's good at. Everyone
doesn't get out of this alive but that's the risk that being an
operative of Frequency is all about.
This is another in a series of fascinating issues of the
maxi-series. The idea of having a different artist for each
installment allows the needs of the story determine who would be
best for the tale. Simon Bisley's craggy/beautiful art matches
the script here. It's a stark tale filled with moments of
terrible acts of violence. I dig this kind of stuff and so
should you if your stomach can take it.
