BOOK
OF THE WEEK:
ANNIHILATION SUPER SKRULL #1 (of 4)
Comic Review by:
Larry "Bocepheus" Evans
Writer: Javier Grillo-Marxuach, Artist:
Greg Titus
The second Annihilation limited series ships this week and
stars the being created to kick the butts of the Fantastic
Four-the Super-Skrull. He has all the powers of the FF (and
uses them in ways they never would consider) and should be a
formidable villain but has always gotten his butt kicked
rather than the other way around. Here the Annihilation Wave
has made it to part of the Skrull Empire and makes short
work of it even with him there. We discover here that SS (as
I will call him because it’s easier) may be a fierce warrior
but he and some feel he is past his prime and overrated. The
Empire wants to deal with the threat and he has an idea but
when rejected he takes matters into his own hands and begins
an adventure that first takes him to Reed Richards (along
with a young Skrull who thinks he’s the coolest) before
entering the Negative Zone. We get much more into the SS
here than we ever had before and that should be expected
since Grillo-Marxuach is one of the writers on Lost. He
tells the story at hand but gives us an added factor is
showing us what SS is thinking while things are going down.
SS isn’t likeable and here we almost begin to feel for him
in spite of ourselves. In the past the general idea with SS
was that he would show up, brag a lot then get the crap beat
out of him to the point where we would wonder what the point
behind him was in the first place. Here he’s almost like one
of those Russian generals that got put out of work after the
fall of the Soviet Union; all he knows is how to kill and
now he has no one to really kill then to add insult to
injury no one wants anything to do with him anyway. The art
here is from Greg Titus and he is sort of doing a Marshall
Rogers vibe here but with more detail. So far this
Annihilation event is looking pretty good. By the way for
those of you who were wondering last week’s Silver Surfer
was great as well.

MARVEL ROUND UP…
Exiles #79 the Exiles enter the world of the Future Hulk this week
and man it isn’t pretty at all. We see and get the story of Rick Jones as he
tries to kill the Maestro with the help of Proteus (who bears a shocking
resemblance to 2099 Hulk since that era has been visited during World Tour) and
finally get a clue what’s under the mask of Power Princess. PLUS it's 40% OFF
this Wednesday…Friendly Neighborhood Spiderman #7 contains a scientific
discussion between Spidey and Iron Man, a date between May and Jarvis, the
conclusion of the El Muerto arc and a reappearance of someone who thought was
dead. You will never see the ending coming…New X-Men #25 if you ever wondered
what happened to a certain X-Men creation then you need to check out this issue
because it shows the maturation of Stryker’s plan and merges the connection
between the team even further.
DC ROUND UP…
100 Bullets #71 has more nudity than you can stand but is surrounded by an
extremely tight story that keeps you reading and wanting more…Batman: LODK #203
(man, this book has lasted this long!)...completes the Cold Case arch and wraps
up the merging between the cartoon version of Mr. Freeze with the comic version.
For a story filled with action the best part of the issue is the quiet way Gage
finishes the story….Captain Atom Armageddon #7 has the Captain save the day as
we discover that he is still a major threat to the Wildstorm world. The book is
gorgeous (and makes you wonder what Camuncoli could do with something like
Superman) and leads us to a massive battle between the Captain and the two on
the cover (no they do not meet here and so the cover even though it is nice
comes off as a scam)…DMZ #6 begins a new arc that involves random bombings,
bad water and the discovery of something most shocking in New Jersey. This is
one of the best books on the market and the upcoming trade should increase
sales…Fables #48 begins the 2-part story of what happened to Bigby. We follow
Mowgli on his search for the missing detective to Russia but most of what
happens is a fight between wolves that is surrounded by a look at what his
children are doing while he is away. |
