EVENT:
RING OF HONOR HOUSE SHOW-062808

EVENT REVIEW BY:
Andrew Schumann

EVENT DATE:
Saturday, June 28th, 2008

LOCATION:
Chicago Ridge Frontier Fieldhouse, Chicago Ridge, Illinois
"Both competitors dug down deep and pulled out all the stops."
MATCH 1:
Silas Young & Alex Payne vs. Rhett Titus & Delirious
This match was originally scheduled to be a four-corner survival match. Titus came out and asked to Delirious to make it a tag match and be his partner. The team of Young and Payne started out with the early advantage in the match. Delirious got the tag and gained control of the match. Young than focused on Delirious and kept the advantage for a couple of minutes. Delirious and Titus picked up the victory with a roll up.

Star Rating: 2 ½ out of 4 stars. They have a story line going that both Titus and Delirious are to trying to capture Daizee Haze heart. During the match whoever was on the apron seemed to be distracted with her out there. It appears that they’re trying to get their wrestling students more involved.
MATCH 2:
Erick Stevens vs. Jay Briscoe
The match started very quickly with each man trying to get the early advantage. This match was very hard hitting with chops and kicks. Stevens were able to pick up a couple of near falls. Briscoe quickly gained the advantage after landing a massive big boot. Briscoe was than able to hit a Death Valley driver and picked up a near fall. Briscoe than again and tried to hit a big boot. Stevens was able to avoid it and rolled up Briscoe into the doctor bomb for the victory.

Star Rating: 3 stars out of 4. This is what ROH does best and that’s a one shot match. Neither wrestler has a program going right now. They went into the match and put on a quality hard-hitting match.
MATCH 3-LAST MAN STANDING MATCH:
Chris Hero vs. Pelle Primeau
Hero got the advantage right off the bell landing several hard elbows. Each time the ref started the 10 count and Primeau got up every time. Primeau was able to gain the advantage on the outside by driving Hero into the guardrail. They swapped back and forth control of the match and trying to pick up the victory. During the match Brent Albright came down and nailed Hero with a huge half nelson suplex. The referee started to count out both guys. Hero’s manager had the referee distracted and Sara Del Ray came in and knocked Primeau down for the count.

Star Rating: 3 stars out of 4. This is a feud that’s making Pelle Primeau into a bigger name within the promotion. Pelle seems to be taking on the Spike Dudley mold in which you can never count him out of any match. Hero is trying to make himself into a striker from the great technical wrestler that he is. Hero always relies on his entourage to help during the match.
MATCH 4:
Kevin Steen & El Generico vs. Tyler Black & Necro Butcher
Kevin Steen jumped the opening bell by attacking Necro Butcher with a senton splash onto the floor. Generico and Steen focused on Black most of the early match. They kept knocking down Necro Butcher every time they could. Necro Butcher got involved by attacking Steen and ramming him into the ring post back first. Necro Butcher and Black took turns working over Generico for a few minutes. Every time Steen would get back on the apron he was knocked back off it. They exchanged control for several minutes. Generico swung the momentum in their favor by nailing Black with a big kick in the turnbuckle. Steen was than able to hit a pump handle neck breaker over his knee on Black. Steen was able to pick a near fall. Necro Butcher got the victory when he rolled up Steen after he hit a steel chair. Black held the chair on the floor and Butcher pushed Steen right into the chair.

Star Rating: 3 out of 4 Stars. I think that this match put the emphasis back on the tag team division. Since the beginning of the year the title has changed hands four times. I think that they’re trying to reestablish a dominant team. El Generico and Steen are a team that could be the ones to next wear the titles.
MATCH 5:
Claudio Castagnoli vs. Bryan Danielson
This was a first time ever match in Ring of Honor between these two. They both were struggling early trying to establish control. They both kept countering each other’s moves. Danielson finally got Claudio into the airplane spin for about 20 seconds. Claudio responded by getting Danielson into the giant swing right after the airplane spin. Both competitors were down for a couple of minutes. Danielson then got the referee into the airplane spin and the crowd ate it up. Danielson got the advantage by locking Claudio into several submission maneuvers and kept raining down elbows. Every time they went for their finishers the other guy knew how to block it or counter. Claudio finally got the victory after launching Danielson up into the air and connecting with him a big European uppercut.

Star Rating: 4 stars out of 4. This was the best technical match I’ve seen in awhile. They knew each other moves so well. Both competitors dug down deep and pulled out all the stops. This was the match of the night.
MATCH 6:
Sara Del Ray vs. Daizee Haze vs. MsChif
This match showcased three of the biggest names of ROH sister promotion Shimmer. Sara Del Ray grabbed the control of the match right from the bell. Del Ray put all of her focus on MsChif. Sara Del Ray suplexed MsChif into the bottom turnbuckle. Sara Del Ray picked up the pinfall after hitting the royal butterfly on haze.

Star Rating: 3 out of 4 stars. This match was short but each competitor was able to showcase their ability. I which that ROH would give these women more than fifteen minutes to put on a match.
MATCH 7:
Go Shiozaki and Adam Pearce vs. Brent Albright and Roderick Strong
Strong and Shiozaki started off the match by trading several hard chops that seemed to be getting stronger and stronger with each one. Go and Pearce worked over Strong for several minutes. Albright finally got the hot tag and cleaned house of both Pearce and Go. Strong was able to hit a gut buster on Pearce. Everyone was able to connect with a series of hard moves. Strong hit Pearce with a kick to the face and Albright grabbed Pearce and hit several knees to the head. The referee noticed that Pearce was out and stopped the match. After the match Pearce’s entourage tried to attack Albright. Albright was able to keep everyone at bay until Pearce lit a fireball in Albright’s face.

Match Rating: 3 Stars out of 4. Both Strong and Albright have a beef with Sweet n sour inc. right now. The crowd was all the way behind both Strong and Albright. The use of the fireball was over the top in my opinion. This just keeps the crowd behind Albright.
MATCH 8-NON TITLE MATCH:
Nigel McGuinness vs. Jerry Lynn
This was Lynn’s first match with the promotion in over 3 years. Right from the opening bell was the action fast and furious. Nigel went right to work on Lynn’s shoulder trying to set up his arm submission maneuver. Nigel gained the control on the outside of the ring by sending Lynn into the crowd. Lynn was able to recover and used the guardrail to hit a tornado DDT. Lynn used the momentum in the ring and nailed a lung blower from the middle turnbuckle. Lynn was able to pick up a near fall after the combination of moves. Nigel was able to regain control after hitting a lariat. Nigel went back to work on the arm with a couple of arm drags. Every time that Nigel went for a lariat Lynn was able to duck or counter the move. Nigel finally got the victory after using his legs to lock up Lynn’s waist and rolled him up.

Star Rating: 4 Stars out of 4. This match proved without a doubt that Lynn at his age could still go with the best of them. Nigel and Jerry Lynn put on what could be an early match of the year candidate.
MATCH 9-RELAXED RULES MATCH:
Austin Aries vs. Jimmy Jacobs
This is the first match of the hottest feuds going on right now in the promotion. At the beginning of the match they agreed to the winner can name the stipulation to the next match. The match quickly spilled to the outside and through the crowd. Jacobs was able to lock on his choke on the bleachers. Aries was able to push Jacobs into the wall and tossed onto the floor. Aries followed up with an elbow drop off the bleachers. They made their way back into the ring. Both men continue to trade control of the match back and forth. Aries locked on a submission several times without getting Jacobs to tap. Jacobs was able to lock on his move with several near taps. Aries was able to hit several running dropkicks on Jacobs in the corner. Aries finally get the victory after nailing the 450 splash. After the match Aries made the match that Jacobs would be facing the Necro Butcher in a no disqualification match next time in Chicago.

Star Rating: 3 ½ out of 4 stars. This match showcased what the promotion does best. A quick based match that produces several exciting near pin falls. The winner of the match could usually never be predicated. This war between the two is long from over.
