EVENT:
RING OF HONOR HOUSE SHOW-062709
Event Review by:
"Our Man" Andy Schumann
Event Date:
Saturday, June 27th, 2009
Location:
Chicago Ridge Frontier Field house, Chicago Ridge, Illinois
"ROH put on another quality show from the first match to the main event."
MATCH 1:
Six Man Mayhem Match
The match featured Delirious, Rhett Titus, Alex Payne, Sami Callihan, Silas Young and Egotistico Fantastico. Ego and Titus started out the match. The action was fast and furious with everyone entering and exiting the ring. Ego got the real cool spot of the match. Ego locked Titus into a surfboard and the propelled Titus into the corner turnbuckle. The cool spot of the match was the double tower of doom. Payne connected with an innovative chin breaker on Young. Delirious tagged in and connected with his back splash for the victory.
Match Rating: 2 ¾ stars out of 4. This match delivered on the goal of the match and warm up the crowd. All six men want out and just delivered an exceptional and high energetic match.
MATCH 2:
Erick Stevens versus Rasche Brown
In the opening minutes of the match Brown used his size advantage to keep Stevens in check. Stevens eventually gained control with using his speed and power. Brown connected on a sit down choke slam for a near fall. Stevens bounced back and connected with a splash in the corner. Brown reversed several attempts by Stevens to land the gut wrench bomb. Stevens finally connected with the power bomb for the victory.
Match Rating: 3 stars out of 4. Brown has delivered in his 2 appearances for Ring of Honor in Chicago. Stevens put on a quality match with Brown.
MATCH 3:
Petey Williams versus Kenny King
Williams is making his first appearance for the company in Chicago. The opening minutes were several reversals. King finally grabbed advantage by using his agility and speed. Williams worked on the neck and head area with several DDTs. Williams landed a very nice ensuigari that got him a near fall. King got the victory with the TKO. After the match Titus and King double teamed Williams for a couple of minutes. Williams was finally able to hit King with the Canadian Destroyer.
Match Rating: 3 stars out of 4. Every time I see King he seems to improve in the ring on subtle things. The whole crowd wanted to see the Canadian Destroyer and the building was torn down when Williams nailed it. Williams is just so smooth in the ring.
MATCH 4:
KENTA versus Tyler Black
This is a first time ever meeting between these 2 wrestlers. KENTA got the early advantage with several hard kicks onto Tyler. Tyler gained the advantage with several chops that knocked KENTA outside. Tyler quickly pounced with a splash onto the ring floor. KENTA tried to hit a tiger suplex and Tyler countered and landed on his feet. Kenta nailed the go 2 sleep and Tyler kicked out at the last second. Tyler tried to nail his small package driver and KENTA reversed it and hit another go 2 Sleep. KENTA was finally able to pick up the victory. After the match Jacobs came out with several people. The group beat down Black and Jacobs was planning on hanging up Tyler by his ankles from the ceiling. Steen and Generico came down to rescue Tyler. Black was able to hang Jacobs up by his ankles from the ceiling.
Match Rating: 4 out of 4 stars. KENTA showed why he’s considered one of the best in the world. Him and Tyler first ever meeting and the language barrier went out and tore down the building. Tyler Black is climbing the tower and shortly will be one of the best in the business.
MATCH 5:
Colt Cabana & Brent Albright vs. Joey Ryan & Claudio Castagnolli
This match was a Chicago street fight and the fight quickly spilled to the outside. Claudio and Ryan introduced a table into the match. Cabana and Albright grabbed the table and knocked down Ryan and Claudio. Cabana and Claudio fought on one side of the building. Cabana nailed Claudio with a moonsault of the guardrail. Claudio and Ryan regained control of the match and put the table in the corner. Cabana was able to pick up the win after splashing Ryan through the table.
Match Rating: 3 stars out of 4. Nothing scientific but just good solid brawling matches that helps advance the feud some more. The scary moment of the match it appeared that Cabana’s father was knocked down to the ground and required some medical attention.
MATCH 6:
D’Lo Brown versus Roderick Strong
Brown used his size advantage to get the early advantage and just kept the pressure on Strong. Strong got back into the match using the combo of slaps and slams. Strong was able to connect with his gut buster and went for the roll up. Brown reversed and grabbed the ropes for extra strength.
Match Rating: 3 stars out of 4. This match gave us fans of the company something they don’t usually do. They have someone blatantly cheat to pick up the victory. Brown is better in the ring than I originally thought.
MATCH 7:
Kevin Steen & El Generico vs. The American Wolves
There was a stipulation going into this match if the wolves run Steen and Generico wouldn’t get another title shot while they have the belts. If Steen and Generico should win they can pick the stipulation. The referee had a difficult time keeping all 4 competitors in check. They were going in and out at whim. Steen and Generico got the early advantage with Steen delivering several flipping leg drops. The wolves focused on Generico knee most of the match trying to force him to submit. Generico landed with a flipping turnbuckle to turnbuckle kick for a near fall. The wolves locked in submission moves on both opponents. Generico finally got the pin fall after nailing the brain buster on the turnbuckle.
Match Rating: 4 stars out of 4 stars. This match showed that the tag team division is still on fire. These teams have had a feud most of this year and it just keeps getting stronger. These teams get stronger and keep putting on great matches.
MATCH 8:
Austin Aries versus Nigel McGuiness for the ROH Title
Aries made history by becoming the first ever two time champion. Nigel was making his return from an injured biceps. The match in the beginning was slow with several reversals by both competitors. Nigel got the advantage by focusing on Aries shoulder. Nigel connected with a couple of tower of londons. Aries roared back to regain control of the match. Nigel flinched several times after landing a couple of lariats. Aries retained the belt after nailing a stiff kick and the brain buster.
Match Rating; 4 out of 4 stars. This match showed why these guys are 2 of the best in the company. Nigel even not fully healed still went out and delivered one heck of a match.
OVERALL SHOW RATING: 3 stars out of 4
3 stars out of 4. ROH put on another quality show from the first match to the main event. They brought out Ric Flair and he cut a promo. Flair talked about the talent the company has and how he loves Chicago. I like that they’re rotating some of the talent through the shows. They will be back on September 19th with Bret Hart.
