COMICBOOKMAN SEZ: Every week in this newsletter I detail our shipping numbers for that week in "Crunching the Numbers". The charts and graphs listed show you the weeks shipping rankings by publisher according to our numbers. Beyond Alternate Reality there are the nationwide numbers and with the start of the new year the 2014 publishing stats were released this week. The TOP 10 chart below is based on information released by Diamond Comic Distributors this week and reflects sales to comic stores in U.S. and Canada by Diamond. BTW: if you were ever wondering how Diamond got to call the shots on all aspects of comic book distribution, check out Part One of our Four Part series starting this week on the origins of NEW COMIC WEDNESDAYS in our Did You Know? weekly feature below.

The numbers themselves pretty much reaffirm the rankings the industry has been looking at for quite some time now....

Once again Marvel is the number one publisher both in terms of units shipped out the door and dollars generated with DC coming in as the perennial Number 2. Marvel generated 6% more in sales over DC but only shipped 4% more product than the Distinctive Competition. Not apparent in the numbers is that Marvel has all but phased the $2.99 price point out of their line while DC still "Holds the Line at $2.99" for about half of their line. Marvel also publishes many more $4.99 "event" books than DC, all of which helped put them at the top of the heap in 2014. This means that once again this year comic fans voted with their dollars to purchase Marvel's more expensive line of books over DC's less inexpensive slate of titles. Nine of the TOP 10 comics that shipped last year were from Marvel and of those nine none were $2.99 and two were $5.99. For all the complaining some people make about how expensive comics are, folks are still buying them-especially the most expensive of them-in droves. These numbers tell publishers that the market will support higher price points on monthly comics, so don't be surprised if that's what you get this year. You can of course follow the weeks changing price points in our "NEW COMICS COST HOW MUCH" feature below every week.

The good news (here comes the ad): All these comics were 15% OFF during the first full week of their release at Alternate Reality. In fact the majority of these books were 40% OFF at Alternate Reality on the first day of their release because they were part of our "1ST DAY SALE". So in 2015 no other store will save you more on your new comics than Alternate Reality!

At Alternate Reality, we order 99.9% of the comics PREVIEWS solicits each month. Keep that in mind as you read the numbers below; they not only break down our week, but they're also a pretty accurate representation of the week in comics nationwide.

This week sees DC back in 1st Place shipping five more titles than the 2nd Place Marvel. If you look at the actual dollar amount separating the two companies, you'll see proof of our opening market analysis above in this weeks shipping pudding. Marvel's more expensive slate of titles puts them within one dollar of DC's much larger units shipped. Bottom line being Marvel will make almost as much as DC this week by shipping many fewer titles. 3rd, 4th and 5th Place are pretty evenly spread out by Dynamite, Image and Boom respectively. Dynamite "pulls a Marvel how this week's dollar amount is reinforced by shipping three fewer titles than Marvel but trumping them in dollar amount for this week thanks to a $7.99 parallel variant Vampirella event special. Indies take a break this week dropping below the 40 title mark this week for the first time in a while. Parcing out the Indy numbers we see Zenescope is this weeks 6th Place shipper with ten titles (on only 3 actual books) and Dark Horse is in 7th Place with six actual titles this week.

NEW COMICS COST HOW MUCH?!?: Here's the price point breakdown for the Week of 01/14/15. For the coming week there are 142 NEW COMICS shipping with eight price points ranging from $2.99 to $9.99. The largest concentration of books again falls into the $3.99 price point with the $2.99 price point trailing a very distant second. As mentioned above DC is essentially keeping this price point alive with 17 of the weeks 27 $2.99 books coming from them. Remember, no matter the point, you save 15% OFF of ALL of this week's New Comics all week long only at Alternate Reality!

THIS WEEK'S HIGHLIGHTS: The Book of the Week this week is not what you would expect and the reason has everything with the Behind the Scenes of the books marketing. Dark Horse really wants you to buy CONAN RED SONJA #1. It's an Indy comic cross over title (Dark Horse and Dynamite), it's the first time these two REH creations have teamed up since Marvel had control of the franchise and it's getting a big over ship by the publisher to me. So what about STAR WARS #1? It will sell itself this week. If you haven't heard it's officially the biggest release of 2015 with over a million copies ordered by retailers. All of which is a little amazing because it's not like Star Wars has been off the comic racks since Marvel last cancelled the book in the mid 80's. Anyway Star Wars (which will be a 40% Off 1ST DAY SALE book) this Wednesday will sell itself while Conan Red Sonja #1 could use a week long push to get it into folks hands. Behind the scenes that's how that breaks down here at Alternate Reality. The beginning of the end, a return to comics and video games mark DC'S week as FABLES THE WOLF AMONG US #1 (40% OFF this Wednesday) sees the on line comic adaptation of the video game in print. Fables is of course wrapping thingsup with #150 so this will probably be the last of the Fables mini-series we'll be seeing. Also based on a videogame (exclusively here) is MORTAL KOMBAT X #1 based of course on the long time franchise. VAMPIRELLA #100 arrives this week from Dynamite and before you ask this is considered the 100th Dynamite monthly regular series appearance by the "Damsel from Draculon". Being an event special it carries a $7.99 cover price (15% Off here at the store) and comes in four parallel variant covers. If you check the "COVER PRICE BREAKDOWN" chart above, this is where the weeks four $7.99 price point books come from. Speaking of price point heros our one $9.99 book on the above chart is BOOM BOX 2014 MIX TAPE #1 an eclectic collection of stories based on characters that are anything but your average lot. Talking hamburgers, misunderstood ghosts, and punk rock grandmas are just the tip of these stories that are best described as "off the beaten track." With only 38 titles this week, the INDY PIT is a little on the shallow side but the one stand out is VEROTIK WORLD #4 WEIRD VOODOO by writer Glenn Danzig and artist Rafa Garres. Why is the fourth issue of this title a "stand out"? Because the third issue shipped in April of 2005. So for fans of this book your decade long wait is finally over!
