Dreaded Deadline Doom...
COMICBOOKMAN SEZ:  As I sit here writing this I am coming up on the Dreaded Deadline Doom of Previews Order Weekend. For me it's that special time of the month where I crack open the Previews Catalog (the same one I have been pushing on my customers for the past few weeks) and begin the ordering slog. If you've ever watched the days slip by as you get closer to a root canal, you are somewhat familiar with the joy I am experiencing right now. Now imagine a scheduled root canal once a month, every month for over thirty years. Doing the store's Previews Order is a long, tedious, march through my numbers. At home (where a lot of the work gets done) it's usually accompanied by chorus' of "Is the Order done yet" as I find reasons to procrastinate and do anything but the order. Hey, that sock drawer hasn't been organized in quite a while-I better get on that! I get more work done on Previews Weekend than any other time of the month!

Anyway this go around with the Catalog looks to be harder than most because of what the big two are doing. Marvel is essentially shutting down large sections their line with this months Catalog as they prepare for next months continuity shattering, status busting Secret Wars event. Final issues that lead into events are notoriously hard to order because retailers don't know where the readers heart will land. Do I order up on the last issue of Fantastic Four because you will never see the team again after Secret Wars gets done with them, or will fandom united still not care about Marvel's "First Family" (F4 has always been an underperforming book) and avoid #645 no matter what. I have to order this issue and the numbers I plug in will mean the difference between selling out, just enough or quarter book clearance boxes months from now. Avengers #44, Secret Avengers #15, Miles Morales Ultimate Spiderman #12 and New Avengers #43 all also end this month. Ordering is both an art and a science and this months catalog falls deeper into the art side of the equation.

It just gets worse at DC this month as the whole line gets scrapped and the Convergence event begins. Once upon a time this was supposed to be a "band aid" for DC publishing. If you missed it, DC Comics has packed up and moved their offices from New York to Los Angeles under the Warner's Corporate assumption that having the comic company in the same physical space as where the movie industry is will some how expedite getting ideas from the printed page to you TV/Movie screens (apparently the internet just isn't good enough for instant communications from one coast to the other). While this physical move was being made the Convergence event was the publishing band aid DC was going to use to keep the trains running on time while phones are installed, desks are set up and keys passed out to the new corporate bathrooms. Essentially it was a month long "5th Week" fill-in event (event with a small "e") which has grown to be a two month long re shuffling of the DCU multi-versal deck "EVENT" series. The first fatality of this new order is the "New 52". The DCU after Convergence will lose that editorial branding and the line trimmed to 49 books (really guys, you couldn't have found four other titles to keep the line at 52?) To get from here to there characters will die, worlds will be shattered pre-New 52 characters will return and if we're really lucky dogs and cats may sleep together. All of which makes for an ordering nightmare for me this coming weekend.

So as the doom of Convergence and the impending Secret War become tangible for me, don't forget to get you pre-orders in by Thursday this week, you're: "Dreaded Deadline Doom"! Diamond is giving all of us an extra day this month-I wish I had an extra month!

CONVERGENCE #1

At Alternate Reality, we order 99.9% of the comics PREVIEWS solicits. Keep that in mind as you read the numbers below; they not only break down our week, but they're also a good representation of the week in comics nationwide.

The February shipping rollercoaster ends on a high note as four more titles ship out this week creating a 171 total for the last shipping week of February 2015. Once again the TOP 5 starts off with DC taking 1st Place with thirty titles. 2nd Place finds Marvel right behind with twenty eight titles. Of note are the cash total for the First and Second Place shippers for the week. Even though Marvel is shipping two fewer books than DC, their books (assuming you bought the entire line) are going to cost you eleven dollars more than DC's this week. Meanwhile IDW returns to the shelves this week in 3rd Place with twenty-six titles. 4th Place dips a bit with Image and their eighteen books and in 5th Place is Dynamite with fifteen books. Indy Comics are up slightly compared to last week with fifty four titles. Digging deeper into those numbers Boom pulls into 6th Place with thirteen titles. All together there are nineteen different publishers who are responsible for this weeks 171 titles.

THIS WEEK'S HIGHLIGHTS: Spiders, spiders everywhere as Gwen Stacy lives and the Spider Verse officially ends, another BBC hit becomes a comic, Archie revamps another Red Circle property, Creature Cops 2-fer, a new Vertigo ongoing powerhouse series begins and more for the last week of February 2015. Where were you the day Gwen Stacy died? Doesn't matter because she's back (via the Spider Verse) and spider powered in SPIDER-GWEN #1, our 40% Off all week long Book of the Week. Brought to you by the same creative team that debuted her in Edge of the Spider-Verse #2 (writer Jason Latour, artist Javier Rodriguez) the story picks up after the events of this weeks AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #15 which is the epilogue to the Spider-Verse storyline. But wait Spider-fans-THAT'S NOT ALL! Also shipping this week is SPIDER-MAN 2099 #9, SPIDER-MAN AND X-MEN #3 and for the All Ages crowd out there we have MARVEL UNIVERSE ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN WEB WARRIORS #4. Enough Spidey excitement to send even the most ardent Parker-file into a Spidey coma! Last week we marked the end of the Fables monthly comic series at Vertigo with #149 (the conclusion to the Fables storyline is still to come as a graphic novel). That leaves a big hole in Vertigo's schedule which may be getting filled this week with writer/artists Lee Bermejo's SUICIDERS #1. In the post-apocalyptic New Angeles killing isn't just a crime - it's entertainment and when the U.S. government decides to cut the city loose, things go from bad to worse. To survive, L.A. did what it does best: It turned survival into entertainment. Bermejo has had the magic touch with the graphic novels JOKER, BATMAN: NOEL, LUTHOR and others and this marks his first ongoing monthly series in a while. IDW returns this week (after taking last week off) with five new series spanning all tastes. TMNT MUTANIMALS #1, CREATURE COPS SPECIAL VARMINT UNIT #1 and #2, D4VE #1,  JOE FRANKENSTEIN #1 and the much anticipated BBC adaptation ORPHAN BLACK #1. These last two are both 40% Off this Wednesday. Joe Frankenstein is by the team of Graham Nolan & Chuck Dixon and tells of the latest ancestor to be saddled with the Frankenstein name. Orphan Black continues the adventures of Sarah and her clones and comes with 9 (nine!) parallel variant covers. Over at Image SUPERANNUATED MAN #6 and RASPUTIN #5 both mark the ends of these series. Arriving at Image is another Marvel/Icon refugee book (to keep Casanova company), Ed Brubaker & Sean Phillips' CRIMINAL SPECIAL ED ONE SHOT. Dynamite brings Hal Foster's creation to their pages for the first time with KING PRINCE VALIANT #1 which is 40% Off this Wednesday (all the "King" books have been 40% Off so far!) Ending this week is Gold Key's TUROK DINOSAUR HUNTER #12. I am assuming that all the GK properties are wrapping it up at Dynamite for now. Down in the INDY PIT Archie lined up the team of writer Duane Swierczynski and artist Michael Gaydos for their revamp of the Red Circle hero BLACK HOOD #1. Philly police officer Greg Hettinger stepped into the middle of a gunfight, hot lead shredded his face-and he pulled the trigger, blind. Now Greg is waking up in a world where he's a killer, hopelessly scarred and hooked on painkillers. What does a man do when he can no longer face the world, yet still wants to do good? He puts on a hood. And he ships out his first issue with five parallel variant covers. Over at Zenescope the silicone implants are flying with their re-imagining of the Hans Christian Anderson classic in GFT LITTLE MERMAID #1. Not to be confused in any way with the Disney animated version, this COMPLETELY DIFFERENT version tells the story of a young mermaid who wishes to become human, and she will need to find the courage to confront her fears or perish at the hands of evil.
