Hannibal show runner Bryan Fuller has left the upcoming CBS All Access digital
series Star Trek: Discovery. A statement from CBS says he left the series
because of his busy work schedule. Fuller is producing an adaptation of Neil
Gaiman’s American Gods series and is behind the reboot of Amazing Stories at
NBC. He will remain as executive producer but his participation is minimal and
wrote the first two episodes of the series and the overall arc of the show. The
major reason Fuller left the show was because CBS wanted the show on the air
next year and he wasn’t willing to rush the series on the air that fast. The
show has cast Michelle Yeoh as Captain Georgiou, Hellboy’s Doug Jones as Lt.
Saru, and Rent’s Anthony Rapp as Lt. Stamets. Yeoh isn’t the lead character in
the show; that role of a female Lieutenant Commander hasn’t been cast yet and
will go to an unknown actress. Discovery will be set 10 years before the time of
James T. Kirk. The first season will be thirteen episodes but following seasons
will only run ten episodes each. The show after the first episode will only be
available on the new CBS All Access streaming service even though overseas
audiences will be able to watch the show on Netflix so expect a fair amount of
bootleg copies all over the Internet. CBS says the rationale behind this is
because traditional science-fiction doesn’t do well on broadcast TV. |
