The Long, Tortuous Year of Gunn Being In, Then Out,
Then Back In |
So
last year James Gunn was fired off of Guardians of the Galaxy 3 because of some
jokes he made on social media years ago that he said he was sorry for before
production on Guardians of the Galaxy even started shooting. It ticked off fans.
Really ticked off Dave Bautista and left Marvel with this big hole on its
schedule. So the search for a new director began and the most obvious choice was
Thor: Ragnarok’s Taika Waititi but he said he said he wasn’t interested because
to him those were Gunn’s films. He and Marvel are talking about another movie
but Guardians wasn’t going to be it. Then there were rumors that Kubo and the
Two Strings and Bumblebee’s Travis Knight was Marvel top choice to step in but
he said he’s going back to animation. And then Gunn was hired to write The
Suicide Squad for Warner's. And then they announced he was going to direct it as
well. Gunn was offered a number of DC properties including Superman, which he
wasn’t interested in and he picked Squad. The new film will ignore the first one
and have Idris Elba replace Will Smith as Deadshot. But we kept hearing that
Guardians 3 was going to use Gunn’s script. And out of the blue Marvel announced
that Gunn would return to direct the third film. Deadline reported that the deal
was actually made in January or earlier but Disney wasn’t ready to announce it.
So Gunn will do Suicide Squad and then do Guardians. And I called him coming
back the day he was fired, so there. |
