The Marvel/Sony Break Up Over Spider-Man Custody and
Any Recent Updates |
|

 A
deal could not be worked out between Disney and Sony Pictures so Marvel Studios
President Kevin Feige will no longer be involved in the production of any more
Spider-Man films. Negotiations went on for months with Disney suggesting they
put up 25% of the financing for future Spider-Man films and keep Feige as a
producer. After a while Disney suggested a 50/50 co-financing arrangement
between the studios that would involve other films in the Spider-Man universe.
The Sony management team of Tom Rothman and Tony Vinciquerra proposed keeping
the arrangement already in place which had Marvel receiving 5% of first dollar
gross and keeping all the merchandising money. Disney hasn’t commented about the
break down but Sony released a statement that downplayed Feige’s involvement in
the franchise. Their statement went on to suggest that Feige didn’t have time to
work on the future films anyway. When the story initially broke it was reported
than both Jon Watts and Tom Holland were contractually obligated for two more
Spider-Man films but according to Deadline Watts isn’t beholden to Sony at all
and Marvel Studios is looking for a film for him to work on. Writers Chris
McKenna and Erik Sommers are already working on a third film and Holland is only
contracted for one more film. But that film will have no Marvel references in it
at all so elements from Far From Home connected to the MCU would have to be
removed. Sony’s stock did take a mild hit when the divorce was announced and
talks between Disney and Sony have resumed. This story is far from over.
