“I never really went in one direction or another.
I just kind of played around with it when I was real
young. Around the time I was 11 or 12, I decided I
wanted to start drawing humans better, so I copied
Japanese Manga, Battle of the Planets, Captain
Harlock, stuff like that, and learned how to do
people from that.” |

DREW HAYES DIES...On
Friday, March 23, comic book
publisher Sirius Entertainment
reported that Poison Elves creator
Drew Hayes had suffered a heart
attack and died. The 37-year-old
writer-artist created I, Lusiphur and
self-published the title starting in
1979. He changed the series title to
Poison Elves with #8, and continued
through #20 under his Mulehide
Graphics imprint before moving it to
Sirius. In 1995 he signed a "lifetime
contract" assigning the rights to the
series to Sirius Entertainment, where
he produced another 79 issues and a
color special, the last of which was
published in September 2004. Hayes’
total output has surpassed 100
issues, many of which are collected
in the ten Poison Elves trade
paperbacks. Poison Elves last issue
(#79) was completed in September 2004
just prior to being sidelined by
illnesses.
Hayes was part of two larger comics
trends -- the first towards
self-publishing in the early 1990s,
and the second a move by many
self-publishers into publishing
arrangements with established
publishers. Known for speaking his
mind – particularly in his letter
columns – Hayes won a loyal fan
following with his core group of
readers, many of whom were looking
forward to his eventual return. He
engaged in an ongoing mock "feud"
with fellow comic creator Brian
Bendis in the letters pages of their
books.
Hayes was overweight, had suffered
cardiac damage from sleep apnea, and
had been hospitalized more than once.
He began plans to resume creating new
issues of Poison Elves, but died at
the age of 37, of a heart attack
while suffering from pneumonia
“I last spoke to Drew in January,
when he was arranging to submit his
original cover for Poison Elves
Volume 11. Drew remained sincerely
committed to creating his best work
ever in the years ahead. He had
proposed re-launching the series with
issue #80 and returning to a
quarterly schedule in 2007. He was
clear that that was his goal and his
intention,” Robb Horan, Publisher of
Sirius Entertainment, posted.
Hayes passed away in his hometown of
Bellingham, WA and is survived by his
daughter, Mary, and his mother,
Sharon. |
