Universal was once known for their monster movies. The studio
is going to make that happen again with a series of new films using those
monsters. The first film of the series will be The Mummy, which stars Tom
Cruise. The idea is to do a series of such films including a new Invisible Man
film starring Johnny Depp and a new Frankenstein film starring Javier Bardem.
Star Trek’s Alex Kurtzman, the director of the new Mummy film says the idea is
to make good movies and there is no plan as of yet to have the films crossover.
Each film will have an appearance by Russell Crowe as Dr. Henry Jekyll, the man
in charge of an organization tasked with tracking the monsters. Arrival’s Eric
Heisserer and Passengers’ Jon Spaihts are working on a Van Helsing film as part
of the concept and their take is to have the monster hunter as a regular guy who
fights monsters anyway. Jurassic Park’s David Koepp is the man behind a new
version of the Bride of Frankenstein, which will be a 2018 project at best since
the Bardem Frankenstein film has to happen first. The planned slate does include
new versions of the Wolfman and the Creature from the Black Lagoon. |
