2016
was the beginning of the reinvention of the Hanna-Barbera cartoon characters as
part of the DC Universe. That brought us Scooby Apocalypse, The Flintstones and
more to the racks. 2017 brought us four one-shots that teamed DC superheroes up
with Space Ghost, the Flintstones, Future Quest and the Banana Splits. On the
last shipping week in May DC will do it again but use Hanna-Barbera characters
from the ’70s. The week will see the release of: Aquaman/Jabberjaw from Dan
Abnett, Paul Pelletier and Andrew Hennessey (with a back-up by Jeff Parker and
Scott Kolins starring Captain Caveman, The Spectre and Shazam); Black
Lightning/Hong Kong Phooey from Bryan Hill, Denys Cowan and Bill Sienkiewicz
(with a back-up by Parker and Kolins featuring a pre-Demon Jason Blood and The
Funky Phantom); The Flash/Speed Buggy from Scott Lobdell, Brett Booth and Norm
Rapmund (starring the Wally West Flash); and Super Sons/Dynomutt from Peter J.
Tomasi, Fernando Pasarin and Oclair Albert. According to DC Vice President Dan
DiDio he was a fan of the 1960’s characters but wasn’t a fan of the 1970’s ones.
But there were creators at DC that were and they convinced him to go for another
round. If these crossovers sell well enough then some of the characters will get
their own books.
