Everyone
loves Hawkman for the most part but his solo series tend to get cancelled
because the writers get caught up in the mythology of the character. Hal Jordan
and the Green Lantern Corps’ Robert Venditti is confident he can avoid all that
with the current ongoing drawn by Bryan Hitch. Venditti says that having Hitch
along for the ride makes him constantly try to come up with something he hasn’t
drawn before. Venditti has read at least 200 Hawkman stories in his research and
realizes that the character is hard to get a handle on. When he debuted in the
40’s you had Carter Hall, who was a reincarnated Egyptian prince who became an
archeologist named Carter Hall. Then he was Katar Hol, a cop from the planet
Thanagar, who came to Earth and assumed the identity of an archeologist named
Carter Hall. He enjoyed both versions but knew he had to make things easier to
understand. Hawkgirl has almost the same screwed up history but she will not be
seen in the series for a while. Ray Palmer has been connected with Hawkman for a
long time and he will show up at some point. The first arc of the series will
have Carter Hall try and stop a threat that coming to destroy him and the DC
Universe but to do so he will have to examine his past lives, some of which he
doesn’t remember. He will be helped by people he has helped in his many
incarnations and his fellow heroes. Venditti is fully aware that Hawkman doesn’t
have a lot of great villains to face off against and we will see them after he
deals with this brand new threat. |
