The
original line-up of the Defenders Hulk, Namor, Doctor Strange and the Silver
Surfer were considered a “non-team” when they first worked together in the ’70s.
Their connection was loose and they got together multiple times with members of
the group added just because a threat came up that made them connect. In
December, the original Defenders will be the subject of a series of one-shots
called The Best Defense. Al Ewing and Simone Di Meo will create Immortal Hulk:
The Best Defense; Chip Zdarsky and Carlos Magno will team for Namor: The Best
Defense; Gerry Duggan and Greg Smallwood team on Doctor Strange: The Best
Defense; Jason Latour does Silver Surfer: The Best Defense and Ewing and Joe
Bennett will wrap things up in The Defenders: The Best Defense. Ewing always
thought is was cool that the Avengers had rules, regulations and a special
charter but the Defenders just hung around in Doctor Strange’s house. Ewing had
the idea that each writer would tell their story and somehow everything would
connect but Latour had an idea that made more sense and connected with other
ideas. The mini event will have one recurring character that will connect each
story but each issue can be read in any order fans want before getting to the
conclusion. We will not get a new ongoing Defenders book after the event but
Zdarsky will be doing an Invaders series which will be part of Marvel's 80th
anniversary celebration. The title will show Captain America and Namor during
World War II and the present. Carlos Magno will tell the current story while
Butch Guice draws the WW2 parts. The title doesn’t have an issue run planned but
will come out all through the year. |
