Last
year DC announced that its Vertigo imprint would publish Second Coming, a
satirical series in which Jesus Christ is forced to learn to be humanity's
savior from a superhero named Sun-Man. The creative team for the series was
announced as Mark Russell and Richard Pace. DC is no longer the home of the
series according to Russell, who says the comic will still be released, just by
a different publisher. Russell explained to his fans on Twitter, "In regards to
DC/Vertigo's cancellation of the orders for Second Coming, just so you know, DC
did not do anything untoward to me. I asked for the rights back and they
gracefully agreed. They've been a pleasure to work with and it will still be
released, albeit with a different publisher." Pace later confirmed the same
thing. Russell later explained that there were changes DC wanted to make to the
project that he and Pace weren't comfortable with. He told the Huffington Post
that he was also asked to take out some curse words and a nude scene involving
Adam in the Garden of Eden. Editorial informed him that even larger changes
would be coming in the future, and the release date would be pushed back to an
unknown date. Fox News and conservative Christian websites had started a
petition calling for DC to cancel the series. The petition had over 230,000
signatures but Russell suggested that the complaints looked like they were
computer generated cut and paste jobs. |
