COMICBOOKMAN SEZ:  As I mentioned last week, Free ComicBook Day is still months off but it's never to early to prime the pump for our biggest Comic Book Sale Day of the year (Black Friday being our biggest overall sale day). Over the years, one of the things we give our customers at checkout (besides bookmarks and CSN's and posters) are free coverless comics. Some of our comics are returnable for lots of different reasons, but our returns are just of the covers - leaving behind the rest rest of the book. We could just dump them in the trash but instead we give them to you as a free "Test Drive" for that book or series. We have given out thousands and thousands of coverless comics over the years which hopefully have been read and possibly sparked your interest picking up "covered" copies of that series (as mentioned-we could just throw them out). Since the start of this year we've stopped passing out the coverless comics and instead have begun passing on to you regular edition "covered" comics with each purchase. These comics all come stickered down in the lower left corner reminding you that "FREE COMIC BOOK DAY IS SATURDAY MAY 2ND". It's just our way of putting you in the right frame for the 2nd Happiest Day of the Year (right after Christmas because not even we can trump the man in the red suit!) Free Comics to everyone, everyday with every purchase; just another way Alternate Reality leads the pack in comics retailing!

  At Alternate Reality, we order 99.9% of the comics PREVIEWS solicits each month. Keep that in mind as you read the numbers below; they not only break down our week, but they're also a pretty accurate representation of the week in comics nationwide.

The top of the list reflects the bottom of the list this week with only a hair separating the rankings in each. For the second week in a row IDW takes the top spot is the rankings just edging out DC by one title. IDW's thirty-four titles and DC's thirty-three put them far ahead of the rest in this weeks standings. Image leads the rest of the pack in 3rd Place with twenty books, with Dynamite & Marvel fighting over 4th and 5th Place with only one title separating them (fifteen and fourteen books respectively).  Indy Comics continue their up and down roller coaster shipping on the downside this week with forty-nine titles. Zenescope & Dark Horse tie for 6th Place with ten titles each with BOOM! just behind them with nine titles.

NEW COMICS COST HOW MUCH?!?:  Here's the price point breakdown for the Week of 01/28/15. For the coming week there are 163 NEW COMICS  shipping with eight price points ranging from $2.95 to $7.99. The largest concentration of books as always falls into the $3.99 price point with the $2.99 price point trailing a distant second but with a stronger showing than previous weeks. THIS WEEK'S HIGHLIGHTS: They may be in 3rd Place this week in the standings, but Image Comics is serving up a full cup of cream in this weeks crop of comics. Starting off, we have Infinity and East of West's writer Jonathan Hickman and artist Ryan Bodenheim are the talents behind our BOOK OF THE WEEK: DYING AND THE DEAD #1 from Image. It's the story of a series of seemingly disjointed events crossing paths which ultimately leads to an aged group of WWII GI's getting back together for one last adventure. Casanova Quinn returns to the racks this week in CASANOVA ACEDIA #1, not from Marvel/Icon but back home again from Image. The powerhouse team of Matt Fraction & Michael Chabon on the words and Fábio Moon & Gabriel Ba on the pretty pictures make this a must buy book for the week and it's 1st Day Sale priced at 40% Off this Wednesday! Also arriving from Image are BITCH PLANET #2, THEY'RE NOT LIKE US #2 and GRAVEYARD SHIFT #2. The latter two books both sold out in their first issues so I expect demand to be strong for them this week. Over at Dynamite the "King" series featuring the King Features Syndicate characters kicks into full speed this week with KING FLASH GORDON #1 & KING THE PHANTOM #1, both of which are also 1st Day Sale priced at 40% Off this Wednesday! Over at DC the MULTIVERSITY GUIDEBOOK #1 is Grant Morrison's DC'S WHO'S WHO for the multiverse that he has crafted/masterminded from the fruits of Infinite Crisis. DC/VERTIGO ships out  Tim Seeley and Marley Zarcone's EFFIGY #1, the tale of a bottom of the barrel actress who returns to her hometown of Effigy Mound, Illinois only to be caught up in bizarre cults, human sacrifices and the worship of society's beautiful people. This one's also 40% Off this Wednesday. Marvel's got the fan favorite of the week with the relaunch of UNCANNY AVENGERS #1, which seeks to unravel the mystery of Counter Earth. Spoiler: It's an earth created by the High Evolutionary back in Warlock #1 in the early 70's that's in the same orbit but opposite our position relative to the sun (so we never see it). Some mystery. Around the Indy Pit this week BOOM! takes another foray into the gaming market with MUNCHKIN #1 based on the hugely successful Steve Jackson game. QUANTUM & WOODY MUST DIE #1 is a four issue mini series from Valiant whose title should be self explanatory. The creative team of writer James Asmus and artist Steve Lieber craft a tale where a team of mystery vigilantes has singled out the world's worst superhero team for complete and utter destruction. If you like Deadpool then you should probably check this book out since they were the ones that originated the whole "wacky, break the 4th wall, don't take yourselves serious" shtick that the Merc With A Mouth has been riding for over a decade now. Or was it the Justice League by DeMatteis/Giffen/Maguire that originated that? It's hard to remember after a while!
