Not The He-Man Woman Haters Club...
COMICBOOKMAN SEZ:  This week on the store's Facebook page a concerned mom (with a lovely, bright wonderful teenage daughter of my acquaintance) forwarded me a link to a blog story about an issue with our industry I have wrestled with at length for some time here at the store. What Taking My Daughter to a Comic Book Store Taught Me was written by a dad who took his sons and daughter to their local comic shop for the first time. The boys found plenty in the shop to keep keep them occupied but the girl - well not so much. In fact, the upshot of the article is that all the shop had to offer his young seven year old reader was: "Hello Kitty", "Monster High" and an education in sexual stereotyping and future objectification. The author goes on to do a lot of "I never knew" self flagellation with a dollop or two of "something has to be done for the sake of our daughters". My first reaction after reading it was, "Why yes, dad, the coffee has been ready for hours - nice of you to finally wake up".

As a father myself, who also happens to have a "lovely, bright, wonderful teenage daughter", and a comic book store, I am intimately familiar with this problem. There are no easy solutions to the problem of comics for young girls and I have thought about it from many angles over the years. The basic core of the problem being the current market is structured to cater to males between the ages of sixteen to sixty with the bulk of those numbers being made up by the thirty to fifty crowd. Boomers and older Gen X-ers are folks the market zeros in on because that's where the easy money is. Two hundred dollar statues and fifty dollar hardcover trades are not aimed at the High School crowd but the group with disposable income. Up until the last few years, the comics industry hasn't exactly been out there beating the bushes for new readers because harvesting the same crop year after year has been much too easy. As a retailer I can only sell what is made by the comic companies, which is precious little for young readers and even less for girls.

Marvel (owned by Disney, the Princess people) out of all there solicitations each month currently has only three titles for kids: Spiderman, the Avengers and the coming Guardians of the Galaxy. Those are all aimed at young boys. DC has a long and almost unbroken history of kids books related solely to Warner's Cartoon characters. Two flavors of Scooby Doo and Teen Titans Go! are their current slate, and while not exactly girls, titles their attitude seems to be "if girls like them great and if not - great". It actually gets a little better once you get out into the Indies. IDW and BOOM both have strong kids lines made up of about half a dozen monthly titles each. The catch is they are almost entirely comprised of licensed properties. So, if your little girl likes My Little Pony, Adventure Time, Regular Show or something else created to push a toy line or animated series then she's got gold to choose from. Not mentioned in the above article but available at the store and still in print (abet barely of late) is the line of Archie Comics which little girls have always gravitated to. Releases from Riverdale have slowed to a trickle of late but digests are still weekly and the comic "Archie" still comes out monthly. Otherwise, there is little variety out there for young girls specifically. What's a store owner to do?!?!

Well, here at Alternate Reality we do what we can to promote kids comics. This news letter and the website shipping page both  have a "Kidz Corner" section devoted to each weeks new all ages shipping. At the store we have a 200 square foot plus"Kidz Corner" area which is an all ages friendly zone for parents and their little ones. Within the Kidz Corner are a few shelves marked "Girl's Rule!" where I stock titles young girls may like. Amelia Rules, Princeless, Spidey Loves Mary Jane and others can be found there. Also in the Kidz Corner you'll find the entire line of mentioned Archie Comics as well as and other licensed titles girls may enjoy. Each week, we get in close to a dozen new All Ages kids titles, if you look below there are ten new comics, two new trade paperbacks and two new magazines arriving just this week. Young girls may want to look at this week's Ranger Rick magazine which is about animal in the wild. On the comic side there is Garfield and the Penguins of Madagascar also arriving this week. No, the sky isn't the limit as per choice but there are a handful of items arriving each and every week here at the store.

Holding onto that little reader once she grows out of the Kids Corner and into her tweens gets into the other topic tackled in the above article: stereotyping and role modeling which we'll tackle next week. In the meantime, if you have any suggestions for titles you would like to see us carry for young girls, or just suggestions on the store in general please drop us a line. I'll be the first to admit some of my best ideas come from folks just like you.

  At Alternate Reality, we order 99.9% of the comics PREVIEWS solicits each month. Keep that in mind as you read the numbers below; they not only break down our week, but they're also a pretty accurate representation of the week in comics nationwide.

A fairly even spread across the bulk of the TOP 5 shipping pack this week as we enter the second month of 2015. DC comfortably retakes the top spot with thirty titles and Image locks into a solid 2nd Place with twenty-six titles. Marvel comes in 3rd with twenty-four and Dynamite falls into 4th Place with twenty-two titles. 5th Place drops down eight titles to put Avatar far in the rear with fourteen titles. Indy Comics are back up again this week with sixty-four titles, fifteen more than last week. Zenescope's four titles net them 6th Place by virtue of all their parallel variants which artificially boost their total to twelve for the week.BOOM! once again ships out nine titles this week winning them 7th Place. In total there are twenty one different Indy and mainstream publishers shipping out books this week which speaks to a strength and diversity of comic voices available for the week of  020415.

THIS WEEK'S HIGHLIGHTS: Superman gets another makeover, there's a cancer in Marvel's Cosmic universe and the return of both Lady Death and Legenderry are some of this weeks highlights.
