Give me Potpourri for $200…
COMICBOOKMAN SEZ: Couple of items I want to cover, none of which related or in and of themselves worth a full column but all are worthy of mention.

SONS OF ANARCHY #18 shipped back on 021815-except to us. We were invoiced for it but when we opened the box - no books. The shortage was called in and a back order was made. The excuse for the shortage was “shipping delay problems from the publisher due to the weather“ which was perfectly understandable at the time. Skip ahead a few weeks to now and as I’m putting together this weeks invoice I notice Sons of Anarchy #19 is shipping. Where’s my #18? A call was made to Diamond and my back order was cancelled because the manufacturer BOOM! ran out of copies. In the business there is a technical term for this, it’s called “getting hosed”. So Thursday I got in the truck and went on a road trip to a few other shops and scrounged together enough copies to cover subscriptions. So, this Wednesday my subscribers will find issues #18 & #19 in their pull and maybe a copy or two for the racks-all no thanks to my distributor.

SOUTH SIDE IRISH PARADE is (as I’m sure everyone knows) on Sunday 031515. Starting at 10:00am 111th Street eastbound will be closed at Kedzie, which means if you’re coming to the store you won’t be able to park in front of it. That plus parade traffic will make both northbound and southbound Kedzie a mess for the better part of Sunday. We will be open our usual hours and there is a way you can get to us. Whichever direction you are coming, get yourself to either 123rd or 119th Street and head northbound to the store down Kedzie. Traffic will probably start to back up at 115th, so ride it out to 113th Street. There make a right and take the FIRST alley that’s a half a block east. That alley runs parallel up and down Kedzie and literally terminates right at the stores back door at our parking lot. Park, walk around to the front, shop and when done exit the same way you came. The alley is littered with speed bumps and there may be pedestrians crossing in the alley and at the street entrances so take it slow but it will still be faster than Kedzie.

Also about the parade, for the last two years Alternate Reality has had a presence at the parade via the Mt.Greenwood Chamber of Commerce. We won’t be attending this year for a variety of reasons none of which have to do with the Chamber. The parade itself has been fun but this year's long winter and the logistics of setting up our participants was just a bridge too far this time around. Maybe next year.

At Alternate Reality, we order 99.9% of the comics PREVIEWS solicits. Keep that in mind as you read the numbers below; they not only break down our week, but they're also a good representation of the week in comics nationwide.

New Comic Wednesday for the third week of March sees a 7.5% increase in overall titles this week over last week. With this increase comes a corresponding shake up in the TOP 5 with a surprise in the tip spot. After shipping out only two titles last week, IDW breaks open the floodgates to take 1st Place with thirty titles. This seems to be a patter with them in that ridiculously small weeks are usually followed by ridiculously big weeks. Second through Fourth Place is a tight pack with only one book separating each place holder. Solidly pulling into 2nd Place is DC with twenty-five titles. Right behind DC is 3rd Place Image with twenty-four books and Marvel pulls into 4th Place with twenty-three titles. shipping eighteen titles. 5th Place Dark Horse is far in the rear with an eleven title output this week. Indy Comics are virtually unchanged this week with one additional title making for a fifty title addition to the week's shipping totals. Digging deeper into those numbers we find Dynamite in 6th Place with eleven titles and BOOM! in 7th with ten titles. This Wednesday you'll find an overall total of twenty different publishers on the racks contributing to this weeks 163 comic total.

Also from Image, creators Gabriel Hardman and Corinna Bechko describe their series INVISIBLE REPUBLIC #1 as a cross between Breaking Bad and Blade Runner. It's rife with fallen empires, rewritten histories, secret princes and it's also 40% off this Wednesday. Additionally from image and 40% off this Wednesday is the book that asks the question: What happens when America's greatest hero...is a Russian Spy? Dun-dun-dunnnnn! RED ONE #1 by writer Xavier Dorison and artists Terry Dodson, Rachel Dodson take us back to 1977 in this funky superhero romp straight out of a Tarantino film. Rounding out the Image foursome is the return of everyone's favorite mad scientists in MANHATTAN PROJECTS SUN BEYOND THE STARS #1 which is a reboot of the series. Writer Jonathan Hickman and artist Nick Pitarra start the series off with "MAN IN SPACE" about how Russian cosmonaut, Yuri Gagarin, finds his true calling once he's lost in space. 40% off all day Wednesday. Meanwhile, over at Marvel, the Spiral miniseries within the main series begins with AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #16.1 by writer Gerry Conway (You killed Gwen - YOU BASTARD!) and artist Carlo Barberi. The underworld is in a constant flux and has been since the Kingpin got taken out in SHADOWLAND. That war is heating up and Spidey's going to do something about it. David Cronenberg's movie "The Fly" was red hot in the summer of 1986, it spawned a sequel, a comic series and then...oblivion. But it's back at IDW this week in FLY OUTBREAK #1 (OF 5) from writer Brandon Seifert and niche favorite artist Menton3. Years ago, a scientist had a horrific accident when he tried to use his newly invented teleportation device and became a human/fly hybrid. Now his almost human son continues to search for a cure for the mutated genes. Bet he forgets to check the teleportation pod for bugs! It's 40% off all day Wednesday as is ORPHAN BLACK #2 by writer John Fawcett and artist Szymon Kudranski, also from IDW. Helena is a murderous, self-abusing fundamentalist who believes she is the "original" and all her other sisters are "abominations" to be eradicated. Well, everyone needs a hobby I suppose. Meanwhile writer Mike Mignola and Artist Ben Stenbeck have dug deep into the roots of horror with FRANKENSTEIN UNDERGROUND #1 (OF 5) from Dark Horse. The Frankenstein creature is alone, abandoned and wandering underground whereupon he will discover other strange creatures-and dark secrets to the universe. 40% off all day Wednesday. Finally, we wrap it up with a look at DC's four Movie poster variants for the week...
