Nick Spencer’s Secret Empire has ended and now we are living in the Marvel
Legacy era. The limited series saw America under the rule of Hydra and its
leader, a Cosmic Cube-altered Captain America. The event actually was started by
Spencer in 2016 with the Avengers event Avengers Standoff. It was a natural
progression that had Captain America go bad and made fans go crazy. Spencer’s
goal was to make fans understand the importance and value of Steve Rogers both
as a symbol and as a man. He knew people were going to be upset but he knew the
story had to be told. It was also the plan to bring the major players from
Standoff back into play such as Bucky, Maria Hill, Kobik and the new Quasar at
the end of the story. Spencer also planned at the end of the story for the
Black Widow to die. Baron Zemo was left at a crossroads since he actually
thought that he was Steve Rogers’ best friend but Spencer isn’t going to be
telling that story. Spencer also leaves open the idea that Hydra now believes
the world has been stolen from them which could make them more dangerous. The
same can be considered for the new Kraken since his identity is still a mystery.
Spencer is taking a break for a while but his next project/book will be
announced soon. Marvel Executive Editor Tom Brevoort says that we haven’t seen
the last of the evil Steve Rogers but it will not be happening for a while and
the new Captain America run by Mark Waid and Chris Samnee will show a world
wondering whether they can trust him again. |
