Century Fox has delayed two of their upcoming X-Men films. X-Men: Dark Phoenix
will move from November to early February 2019 and The New Mutants will now open
August 2019. Both delays are due to reshoots. After Dark Phoenix was test
screened the decision was made to add story. But since most of the cast members
had scheduling conflicts the earliest availability for everyone to return was
August or September and there was no way for the film to make the original
release date so Fox pushed it. Simon Kinberg had actually brought the film in
under budget and so he has been given an extra $10 million to tweak the film. He
wasn’t thrilled with the original release date anyway and when Black Panther was
such a hit coming out President’s Day weekend Fox made the move. And we now have
a better idea who Jessica Chastain will be playing in the film. First reports
had her playing Lilandra, the Shi’ar Empress then maybe the Skrull Queen but now
signs have her playing Miss Sinister. In the case of New Mutants director Josh
Boone turned in a cut of the film that he was happy with but Fox didn’t think
the film was scary enough. Fox wanted something like It and so the reshoots will
end up with about 50% of the film being redone and the addition of at least one
or two new characters. Boone isn’t happy about the changes so lets see how this
all shakes out. There was a rumor that Mad Men’s Jon Hamm was going to show up
at the end of New Mutants as Mister Sinister but with the changes the stinger
will feature a different villain played by Antonio Banderas. |
