Amazon has committed about $250 million per year
for a five year TV series adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings.
Amazon beat out several contenders but one company that didn’t even bid was HBO
because they already had Game of Thrones. The main show is ending but there are
five separate prequels in the works so HBO had no interest in sharing an
intellectual property with anyone. As it is since Warner Bros. Pictures is
co-producing Rings they will get a cut of the series anyway. The show will not
be a remake of the films but a spin-off. The show has to begin production in two
years and Peter Jackson isn’t involved at this point but has talked to Amazon
about something. First reports say the series will focus on a young Aragorn in
the first season. |
