Nope, We Didn't Forget...
COMICBOOKMAN SEZ:  By the time you are reading this, we will hopefully be in the midst of a heat wave here in Chicago. The meteorologists have promised that this week the sub zero wind chills and single digits to teens temps we have endured for the last few months are going to give way to a warm up to the forties. FORTIES, I TELL YOU! Spring is almost here and its time for Mother Nature to beat the March lion into a lamb, and not a moment too soon for our tastes. As much as we love November and December, by the time February rolls around winter has lost most of its charm. By the beginning of March it’s time to say “Good Riddance to Bad Trash” and start eyeing that fall coat that has magically becomes a spring coat with the passage of twelve weeks. Yup, winter is almost over for another year and while I think most of us will welcome the vernal equinox and happily close the book on the Winter of 2015, I bet there are some of you who think something is missing. Let’s see... Christmas - check. New Years - check. MLK Day, Valentines Day, Black History month - check, check, check. Record cold - check. Too damn much snow - check. Winter Wonderland Sale…GOTCHA! It’s almost time for another Sale-A-Bration week.

For over a decade and a half, we’ve held four annual store wide Sale-A-Brations (SAB) and each is tied to an event and season. In the Spring, our Free Comic Book Day SAB runs the week before the first Saturday in May (which is FCBD). During the summer, our Store Anniversary SAB runs with our August 20th Store Anniversary. Each autumn, our Black Friday SAB runs during Thanksgiving week and finally the Winter Wonderland SAB runs sometime around the last week of winter. We would run the winter SAB earlier in the season but the weather calendar is just too much of an obstacle. Each year, because of either snow, cold or a combination of both, we wind up having to close the store for a day or two. Sales like the SAB have to be set in advance and there’s too much of a chance that winter’s bad weather will torpedo the week. Setting it in mid March (still winter) makes the weather co-operating a very safe bet.

During Sale-A-Bration week we suspend most of our regularly scheduled sales so from the 15th through the 21st this month there will be no: “Ladies Day Thursday”, no “SuperSunday Sale” and because of the date no “Founders Day Sale”. 20% off everything in the store and half off all boxed back issues supersedes them all. Our 25% off Will Eisner "Hero of he Month Sale" will continue and the 40% off "1st Day Sale" on the 18th will continue. Also continuing is our weekly 15% Off All New Comics for the week sale. Concerning that last sale, the only exceptions to the "Winter Wonderland SAB" are the week's new comics and our "Buy in Bulk" supplies. Check the link below for details.

For over twenty years, day in and day out no other comic book store has saved you more than Alternate Reality. We do it because we want your business and we want to see you coming back again and again. Why, one could say it’s a way of showing our CUSTOMER APPRECIATION...but that would be pandering. We leave pandering to our competition. So, to the folks who were asking me last month: “Don’t you have a sale coming up”? Yes we do, and it starts real soon...

At Alternate Reality, we order 99.9% of the comics PREVIEWS solicits. Keep that in mind as you read the numbers below; they not only break down our week, but they're also a good representation of the week in comics nationwide.

New Comic Wednesday for the second week of March sees a 14% drop in overall titles this week over last resulting in a week of across the board smaller output form all publishers. Even with this decilne, once again the TOP 5 starts off with DC taking 1st Place with twenty seven titles. Squeaking into 2nd Place is Marvel with twenty-six titles that are overall ten dollars more expensive than 1st Place DC's. 3rd Place takes a tumble from the top two with Image shipping eighteen titles. 4th Place has Dynamite just behind Image with seventeen titles and Boom brings up the rear in 5th Place with fifteen titles. For the first time in a long time, Indy Comics drop below the fifty issue threshold with forty-nine titles arriving this week. Digging deeper into those numbers, Zenescope takes 6th Place with ten titles and Valiant takes 7th Place with eight. In spite of this being a smaller week there are twenty one different publishers contributing to this weeks 152 comic total, five more than last week. Fewer books, yes, but a wider variety will be here this Wednesday.

THIS WEEK'S HIGHLIGHTS: The return of three completely different high concepts from three completely different decades. Oni trots out a dollar premiere, Ninjak returns and it wasn't planned yet it's a big week for two time traveling Californian dudes. It's hard to believe but back in 1976 the hottest Marvel book on the racks was not Spiderman or the X-Men, but Steve Gerber's Howard the Duck. As a publicity stunt Marvel unofficially ran Howard as the presidential candidate of the "Get Down America" Party opposite President Gerald Ford and Jimmy Carter. During that year, Howard's star would never get any brighter as the Duck "trapped in a world he never made" literally captured the nation's attention. Fame ultimately became Howard's downfall as Marvel and Gerber parted ways over "creative differences" and Disney sued Marvel over copyright infringement of Donald Duck. Like the "pet rock" Howard's popularity quickly burned red hot and just as quickly burned out. Over the years, the character has limped along with occasional appearances and a dreadful movie adaptation, but always feeling like a duck out of water. Then, last year's Guardians of the Galaxy movie rescued Howard from obscurity with a surprise end credit appearance. This week, Marvel gives Howard another shot at a monthly series with our 40% off all week long Book of the Week: HOWARD THE DUCK #1 by the team of Chip Zdarsky and Joe Quinones. Will they catch lightning in a bottle again? Probably not, but it will be interesting to see just what they do with the character. Also returning this week are those two time traveling Wyld Stallions for California in BILL & TED MOST TRIUMPHANT RETURN #1 which is 40% off this Wednesday. BOOM! is carving out a rescued 80's movie high concept heroes nitch for themselves first with Big Trouble in Little China's Jack Burton and then with Snake Plissken from Escape From New York. Now following on the time-traveling historic epic of Excellent Adventure and the turbulent life and death of Bogus Journey, Bill and Ted must fulfill their destiny as the inspiration for galactic harmony! BUT THAT'S NOT ALL! Coincidentally DC is helping out Bill & Ted's return with the Action Comics variant cover for this week. Check out the Parting Shot below for the skinny on that! Meanwhile, Howard the Duck hailed from the late seventies and Bill and Ted from the late eighties, Valiant finishes off the 20th Century triple with the return of the 1990's wannabe but never was sensation in this week's NINJAK #1. 40% off this Wednesday, Ninjak's past and future collide in the pages of this all-new ongoing series from New York Times best-selling writer Matt Kindt (RAI, Mind MGMT) and superstar artists Clay Mann (X-Men: Legacy, Gambit) and Butch Guice. DC takes another run at the Batman videogame sensation with  BATMAN ARKHAM KNIGHT #1 by writer Peter J. Tomasi and artists Viktor Bogdanovic & Art Thibert. It's 40% off this Wednesday as are two new titles Image is shipping out.  SOUTHERN CROSS #1 is a crucible of creeping anxiety and fear by writer Becky Cloonan and artist Andy Belanger. The other "Mighty I" title this week is writer Ales Kot's SURFACE #1 which asks the question What would happen if Moebius and District 9 had a baby? Maybe THE SURFACE! Finally, if you have sixty cents extra in your pocket, you may want to chance it on Oni Press' Dollar Comic premiere (40% off this Wednesday) HELLBREAK #1 by writer Cullen Bunn and artist Brian Churilla. There are thousands of Hells, each unique, each terrible. Mega cities ruled by vicious gangs. Empires where the most perverse are well respected. Wastelands roamed by prehistoric monstrosities. With the proper tools and knowhow ... you can infiltrate Hell whether you're dead or not. With the proper tools and knowhow, you can break out. Project Kerberos has developed this forbidden technology, and a special forces extraction team is dispatched to rescue lost souls from the infernal realm. Sounds like a fun party!
